Arbetsbeskrivning

Doctoral student in geometric methods for communications and signal processing Do you love math, and want to use your mathematical skills for something useful? Do you enjoy geometric puzzles? Then this position is for you! About us At the Department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communications, Antennas and Optical Networks, Systems and Control, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. We work with sustainable and smart solutions to societal challenges, such as energy efficiency and electrification in areas ranging from transport and production systems to communication solutions and biomedical engineering. The Division of Communications, Antennas, and Optical Networks (CAOS) researches advanced wireless and optical technologies. We focus on antenna systems, communication and sensing for future 6G, and secure optical networks. Our work supports a more sustainable and efficient communication infrastructure. The division is strongly involved in education and thesis supervision. CAOS researchers also participate in several major research centres at Chalmers. Mathematical methods are essential in most of our projects. About the research project  In this project, we will revisit the classical sphere-packing problem and apply it to improve modern systems for digital communication and signal processing. You will work together with your supervisor and colleagues to design new sphere packings, for example lattices, develop theory and algorithms for their practical use, and study complexity and performance trade-offs in relevant applications. The project is led by Professor Erik Agrell (IEEE Fellow), whose contributions to this research field are internationally recognized, and funding is provided by a prestigious grant from the Swedish Research Council. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Mathematics, Engineering Physics, or Electrical Engineering. • Knowledge in applied mathematics is essential, including mathematical programming. • You need strong written and verbal communication skills in English. • As a person, you are curious and creative, able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others, and interested in developing your research skills in a structured and quality-focused way. *for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. The following experience will strengthen your application: • Knowledge in combinatorics, numerical optimisation and computational geometry • Basic knowledge of digital communications and signal processing Knowledge in Swedish is not needed. English is our working language and candidates of any nationality are welcome to apply. What you will do • Work on challenging geometric problems and contribute new knowledge to the research field. Publish both fundamental and applied research results. • Learn how to formulate research problems, conduct research, validate results and present results, with guidance from your supervisor and colleagues. • Take courses on advanced level within the Graduate schools of Electrical Engineering, Mathematical Sciences and others (see Graduate schools at Chalmers) • Teach in Chalmers’ Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes or perform other duties up to 20% of full time. Contract terms • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start. • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years. • A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025). • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn. What we offer • As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees. • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg. • A friendly, diverse and inclusive environment, where researchers with very different backgrounds (nationality, gender, religion, age, orientation, etc.) work, study and have fun together. We particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups. • Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare, etc., at Move to Gothenburg.   Find more general information about doctoral studies at Chalmers here. Application procedure The application should be written in English and attached as PDF files, as listed below. Use the indicated filenames, where Surname should be replaced by your surname. The maximum size of each file is 40 MB. The system does not support Zip files. 1. CV (filename: Surname_CV.pdf) 2. Personal letter, max 1 page (filename: Surname_Letter.pdf) • Introduce yourself. • Motivate why you are interested in this particular position. • If you have worked on any problems or projects that makes you especially suitable for this position, then summarize those experiences. Applications with a generic letter and no reflections on this particular position will not be considered. 3. Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (filename: Surname_Bachelor.pdf) 4. Master’s transcripts and (if yet available) degree certificate (filename: Surname_Master.pdf) 5. Bachelor’s and (if yet available) master’s thesis (filenames: Surname_BThesis.pdf and Surname_MThesis.pdf) Use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form. We welcome your application no later than Jan. 31, 2026. Please note: The applicant is responsible for ensuring that the application is complete. Incomplete applications and applications sent by email will not be considered.
