Arbetsbeskrivning

Do you want to engage in advanced experimental testing and analytical/numerical modeling to gain a deep understanding of high-performance materials and how they can be used to create a more sustainable built environment? We are seeking a motivated Ph.D. candidate to investigate how the combination of high-strength Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and low-clinker High-Strength Concrete (HSC) can be leveraged to design resource-efficient floor slabs with a substantially lower environmental impact than traditional construction. About the research The Concrete Structures research area at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering focuses on advancing sustainable construction through the extension of service life in existing structures, innovative material and method development, and minimizing environmental impact via efficient design. Our team comprises a dynamic and diverse group of researchers dedicated to excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration. We conduct both fundamental and applied research across various fields, including assessment of existing structures, structural health monitoring, and the use of novel reinforcement types. Our work has earned international recognition, and we maintain long-standing collaborations with leading industry stakeholders, such as contractors, consultancy firms, and the Swedish Road Administration. We pride ourselves on fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment where diverse perspectives are valued, and every team member is encouraged to contribute and grow. Project overview This research project addresses critical challenges in the material interaction, long-term performance, and environmental optimization of CFRP prestressed concrete structures. The project will include: • Experimental studies on the bond behavior between CFRP tendons and HSC. • Quantification of prestressing losses due to shrinkage and creep. • Evaluation of deformation capacity under various loading conditions. • Analytical and numerical modeling to optimize geometry and reinforcement layouts. • Life-cycle analysis to assess the environmental footprint of the proposed solutions, compared with traditional steel-based systems. The project aims to establish innovative design methodologies that enhance durability and sustainability in concrete construction. Major responsibilities As a PhD student, your primary responsibility is to complete your doctoral studies, which includes conducting research, participating in relevant courses, and fulfilling departmental duties such as teaching (up to 20% of your time). Specific tasks include: • Conducting literature reviews to establish a strong foundation for the research. • Designing and executing research studies, including experimental setups and project timelines. • Managing daily work independently while effectively meeting research milestones. • Performing experimental work in laboratory settings with support from research engineers. • Conducting numerical analyses that integrate experimental data with theoretical principles. • Publishing high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals. • Presenting findings at national and international conferences. • Assisting in teaching undergraduate courses, including lectures, laboratory supervision, tutorials, and examinations. Qualifications Required: • MSc in Structural or Civil Engineering (or an equivalent degree) with strong knowledge of structural analysis. • Understanding of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. • Basic programming skills (e.g., for automating tasks, creating simple functions, or visualizing data). • Familiarity with the Finite Element Method and its application in analyses. • Proficiency in written and spoken English. Meritorious: • Experience with experimental work, particularly in testing concrete materials and structures. • Skills in data processing and analysis. • Knowledge of material mechanics and nonlinear finite element analysis. • Familiarity with the design and technical requirements of concrete floors. • Strong communication and pedagogical skills. • Understanding of fiber-reinforced polymer materials and alternative binders (e.g., green concrete or geopolymers). Contract terms This is a full-time, temporary position with a maximum duration of five years. Up to 20% of your time will involve departmental duties, primarily teaching, while the remainder will focus on your research and coursework. The nominal timeframe to obtain a PhD degree is four years (excluding departmental duties). What we offer Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.  Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees. Application procedure Your application, written in English, should be submitted electronically and include the following PDF documents (maximum size per file: 40 MB; no ZIP files): • CV • Your CV. • Details of previous employments or leadership roles. • Contact information for two references. • Personal letter • A 1–2-page introduction to yourself. • Description of relevant experience (e.g., education, thesis work, and any research activities). • Your future goals and research focus. • Additional documents • Copies of your Bachelor’s and/or Master’s thesis. • Certified copies and transcripts of your educational records, including grades and certificates (e.g., TOEFL results, if applicable). Please note: Applications must be complete to be considered. Incomplete submissions or applications sent via email will not be processed. Application deadline: 20 January, 2025 Contact information For specific questions about the research project, please contact: Carlos Gil Berrocal, Senior Lecturer [email protected] For other inquiries related to employment or the Division of Structural Engineering, please contact: Prof. Karin Lundgren, Head of Division [email protected]
