The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. At the Institute of Biomedicine, Department of microbiology and immunology, extensive vaccine research has been carried out for a long time, especially on vaccines to be given by mouth (orally) to effectively induce immune protection at the intestinal mucosa. The research has resulted in the development of oral vaccines against cholera and other life-threatening intestinal infections, including the worldwide registered vaccine Dukoral and locally produced similar oral vaccines in developing countries used in the global fight against cholera. The current project aims at the development of a further improved oral cholera vaccine that is both heat and stomach acid stable. The employment concerns research and development of such a vaccine within the framework of a specific project: "Stage II (clinical) development of DuoChol, a low-cost, thermostable dry formulation whole-cell/B subunit enterocoated capsule oral cholera vaccine", focused on methods and technology transfer for GMP manufacturing, toxicity studies and phase 1 studies of such vaccine Duties  The employment concerns research and development of such vaccine within the framework of the mentioned project grant, mainly optimization and technology transfer for GMP manufacturing of: • Fermentor culture methods and processes for producing whole-cell vaccine components; • Methods for the production and purification of recombinant B-subunit (rCTB); • Methods for lyophilization of combined whole-cell/rCTB vaccine; • Methods for manufacturing vaccines in a capsule preparation; • Methods/"Standard operating procedures" (SOPs) for qualitative and quantitative characterization of vaccines. • Supervision and control analyses of externally GMP-manufactured "Drug substances" and "Drug Product" • Supervision and immune response analyses of externally performed toxicity tests in mice • Preclinical (animal experimental) vaccine studies of developed new vaccine compared to licensed oral cholera vaccine (Dukoral) • Participate in the planning of phase 1 study on humans. Qualifications  • An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. • Documented experience of molecular biological, biotechnical, immunological and animal experimental research on cholera bacteria, cholera toxin proteins and oral cholera vaccine. • Demonstrated potential for successful fulfillment of the set job assignments. • Experience of experimental planning and analysis as well as of guidance and supervision of technical staff.
