Senior Project Engineer – Control & Protection Software, Se-quence & Interlocking HVDC

The opportunity

Our names are Andrew Carruthers and Richard Palm, and together we lead the teams responsible for Sequence & Interlocking within HVDC Control & Protection. Our work sits at the operational core of an HVDC station.

We define the logic that ensures equipment is operated safely and correctly. We develop interlocking principles, automated switching sequences, operating states, and the conditions that determine when a station is ready to perform a specific action. Our solutions help ensure that complex HVDC systems operate safely, predictably, and reliably throughout their lifecycle.

As HVDC technology continues to evolve, so do the challenges. New technologies, new customer requirements, and new ways of operating power systems continuously shape how we work. Success depends on our team members who can understand the bigger picture, exercise strong engineering judgement, and transform complex requirements into robust and reliable solutions.

We are looking for experienced engineers who enjoy technical ownership, system thinking, and solving challenging engineering problems together with highly skilled colleagues.

How you'll make an impact

• Design and develop Sequence & Interlocking solutions for HVDC Control & Protection systems.
• Transform system and customer requirements into robust operational logic and engineering solutions.
• Work closely with system design, control, protection, testing, and commissioning teams throughout the project lifecycle.
• Take technical ownership of specific functions, systems, or project areas.
• Verify and validate solutions through testing, troubleshooting, and system integration activities.
• Support commissioning activities and experience how your engineering decisions perform in the real world.
• Drive technical discussions both internally and with customers.
• Mentor and support less experienced engineers while contributing to the development of our team's technical capability.
• Contribute to future methods, tools, and technical solutions within Sequence & Interlocking.

Your background

We care more about technical capability and your personal skills than matching every item on a checklist. You likely have:

• A degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Systems, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
• Several years of experience working with complex technical systems.
• Experience in HVDC, FACTS, substation automation, protection and control systems, industrial automation, power systems, or similar fields.
• Experience with commissioning, protection systems, relay applications, operational sequencing, or HVDC projects is highly valued.
• Strong analytical skills and an ability to understand interactions across multiple systems and disciplines.
• The confidence to challenge assumptions and contribute to technical discussions.
• A structured approach and a curios mindset to engineering and problem solving.
• The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with others.
• Professional communication skills in English.
