Mechanical Design Engineer – Industrial Design Focus
We are a group of people who think differently, have a passion for entrepreneurship, and strive to maintain a flat organization where we all are expected to make a difference. We believe in making the impossible possible together – by building on each individual's personal strengths. Our goal is to change the way cities in Europe are heated and cooled, do you want to shape the future with us?
The world is in the midst of an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. We have developed a wide range of smart heat pump solutions built on modern software. The products are suitable for everything from small apartments to large property complexes and entire residential blocks. The next generation of heat pumps are not only very energy efficient but also designed to be an active node in the electrical grid. Qvantum has developed a series of new capabilities for this purpose including our heat pump to grid (HP2G), flexready®, thermal battery and digital doctor features.
About the job
Together with a dedicated product development team, you will be developing our next generation of heat pumps. As a core member of the team, you will be in the driver’s seat—designing the mechanical components and solutions that define our new products. This includes creating prototypes, collaborating with external component suppliers, verifying product performance, producing technical documentation, managing the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, and preparing full-scale production. With access to our in-house lab, you and the team can rapidly build, test, and validate prototypes, enabling fast learning and efficient development cycles. You will contribute to, and help drive, the full “end-to-end” development process from concept phase to successful commercial launch.
Beyond traditional mechanical engineering, you will help shape how our products look, feel, function, and are experienced by users, installers, and service teams. You will take ownership of the mechanical platform’s holistic design—ensuring technical robustness while driving alignment, visual coherence, material choices, modularity, and interface solutions. Your work will span the full product lifecycle: from early concept sketches and prototypes to verification, industrialization, and final production.
Key responsibilities include:
• Designing mechanical components, assemblies, and complete modules with both functional and aesthetic considerations in mind (alignment, proportions, surface finishes, colors, design lines).
• Leading the mechanical direction for the platform, ensuring consistency and design integrity across product variants.
• Creating modular solutions that optimize manufacturability, installation, serviceability, and long-term scalability.
• Developing interfaces and usability-driven features that support efficient collaboration between R&D, production, installers, and end customers.
• Building and testing prototypes in our in-house lab to rapidly evaluate and iterate on design choices.
• Collaborating closely with other engineering disciplines, industrial designers, product management, and external suppliers.
• Creating technical documentation throughout the entire product lifecycle.
Desired Qualifications & Experience
• Engineering degree (B.Sc. or M. Sc.) in Mechanical Engineering, Product Development, Industrial Design Engineering or a closely related field.
• 5+ years of experience in mechanical product development within a full-scale production, industrialization, or hardware-focused tech environment.
• Strong capability to merge engineering and design, with proven experience creating products for large-scale manufacturing. You have a demonstrated ability to balance functionality, manufacturability, usability, and visual expression — translating design intent into solutions that can be efficiently produced in high volumes. Extensive hands-on experience with manufacturing processes, industrialization, and tooling is essential.
• Demonstrated skills in aesthetic design elements including alignment, surface finishes, geometric coherence, color/material/finish (CMF) considerations, and design line development.
• Hands-on experience with modular product architectures, materials selection, and scalable mechanical platform design.
• Strong proficiency with 3D CAD tools (such as SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor or similar) and a structured approach to modelling, detailing, and version control.
• Experience working with PLM systems and managing products throughout the full lifecycle—from concept and prototyping to verification and industrialization.
• Familiarity with DFM/DFA principles, manufacturability constraints, and supplier collaboration within mechanical production.
• Experience building and testing prototypes, performing mechanical verification, and iterating quickly based on test results.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with industrial designers, UX resources and cross-functional engineering teams, translating design intent into robust mechanical solutions.
• Strong communication and documentation skills for aligning stakeholders across R&D, production, supply chain, installers, and external partners.
• Experience from HVAC, heat pump systems, consumer products, household appliances, automotive, or other complex mechanical disciplines is considered a merit.
• A passion for combining engineering precision with thoughtful, user-centered design—and an ambition to shape products that stand out both technically and aesthetically.
Cultural Fit
To thrive in this role, we believe you:
• Are motivated by building something new in a fast-scaling environment where learning, iteration and adaptability are essential.
• Enjoy working end-to-end—from hands-on testing to high-level conceptual thinking.
• Appreciate a flat, entrepreneurial organization where initiative is expected and ideas can move quickly into action.
• Take ownership, follow through and maintain high attention to detail without losing sight of the bigger picture.
• Communicate openly, collaborate naturally and value cross-functional problem solving.
• Are energized by diverse teams and international collaboration across Europe.
• Have a long-term mindset: you want to build platforms that last, evolve and scale.
