Join an international research environment developing the software infrastructure needed for next-generation fusion modelling. You will work at the interface between scientific computing, high-performance computing and fusion research, contributing to software used within major European and international fusion programmes. The position offers the opportunity to shape sustainable scientific software and integrated modelling tools with applications ranging from present-day fusion experiments to ITER and future fusion reactors.
Information about the research group
The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) group at Chalmers conducts research on the modelling, simulation and analysis of magnetically confined fusion plasmas, with a particular focus on tokamak physics. A major part of the research is aimed at developing predictive capabilities for transport in fusion-relevant plasmas and validating models against experimental observations. The group collaborates with major international fusion facilities and contributes to research supporting ITER and the development of future fusion devices. Modern fusion research increasingly relies on integrated multi-physics simulations that combine plasma transport, equilibrium, heating and current drive, turbulence, MHD stability, plasma-wall interactions, and synthetic diagnostics.
At Chalmers, we develop and maintain scientific software, workflows, and data infrastructure that enable modular, scalable, and reproducible fusion simulations. Current activities include development of the European Transport Simulator (ETS), the Transport Code Interfaces (TCI), integrated modelling frameworks based on the ITER Integrated Modelling & Analysis Suite (IMAS), workflow coupling using MUSCLE3, and execution on high-performance computing systems. The activities are closely integrated with the European fusion research programme EUROfusion and with international developments related to ITER.
