Role Summary

An experienced Linux System Administrator is needed for a consulting assignment focused on designing, building and maintaining a GPU-enabled remote desktop and virtual desktop infrastructure environment. The platform supports high-performance remote desktops for pre-processing and post-processing of High-Performance Computing (HPC) workloads, including simulation, visualization and rendering.

The environment is based on Rocky Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), with technologies including X11, Xfce4, NICE DCV, EnginFrame and SLURM. The assignment has a strong emphasis on automation, platform engineering, system architecture and long-term operational sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, operate and maintain a Linux-based GPU-enabled VDI and remote desktop environment.
• Develop and maintain automation and Infrastructure-as-Code solutions to enable consistent, repeatable platform deployments.
• Use Ansible primarily to automate configuration management, provisioning and operational workflows.
• Ensure that the platform remains secure, scalable, high-performing and maintainable over time.
• Support remote desktop use cases for HPC-related simulation, visualization and rendering workloads.
• Collaborate closely with HPC and infrastructure engineering teams on platform design, integration and operations.
• Document solution architecture, system configurations, deployment workflows and operational procedures.
• Contribute to monitoring, observability and troubleshooting of complex Linux infrastructure environments.

Technical Stack & Requirements

• Rocky Linux and/or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
• Ansible and Infrastructure-as-Code practices for automated deployments and configuration management.
• Bash scripting; Python is advantageous.
• Git and GitLab, including experience working with CI/CD pipelines.
• X11 and Linux desktop environments, particularly Xfce4 and GNOME.
• Remote rendering, display and visualization technologies, including NICE DCV and EnginFrame.
• Networking, infrastructure security and monitoring capabilities.
• Prometheus-based monitoring and observability tooling.
• HPC environments and the SLURM workload manager are advantageous.
• Docker, Podman and Open OnDemand are beneficial.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal consultant has solid hands-on experience as a Linux System Administrator, preferably in Rocky Linux or RHEL environments. Strong experience in automation and Infrastructure-as-Code is required, ideally with Ansible or comparable tooling. The role requires proficiency in Bash scripting, while Python experience is considered beneficial.

Experience with CI/CD practices, version control, Linux graphical environments, remote display technologies, networking, security and monitoring is expected. The consultant should be capable of designing scalable, maintainable technical platforms and independently taking ownership of complex infrastructure environments. Experience supporting HPC platforms, SLURM, remote visualization solutions and container technologies is considered advantageous.
