The School of Information Technology

Halmstad University’s School of Information Technology (ITE) is a renowned multi-disciplinary institution with around 155 employees from 20 different countries. ITE is internationally recognised for its applied research and collaborative initiatives, focusing on smart technology and its practical applications.

Within ITE, our students and researchers engage in diverse areas of study, including electronics, AI, information-driven healthcare, autonomous vehicles, social robotics, and digital design. We offer a comprehensive range of educational programmes, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral levels, as well as professional development opportunities.

Research is conducted within the University’s research programmes, especially Information Driven Care (IDC), Re-Imagining Future Smart Living – beyond the Living Lab (REBEL), Learning in a Digitalised Society (LeaDS) and the Future Industry Research Programme (FIRP).

ITE is home to Leap for Life, an innovation centre for information-driven care, as well as the Electronics Centre in Halmstad (ECH), a collaborative space for electronic development.

Description

This is a temporary position for twelve months and requires a combination of many different skills related to software development, machine learning and programming, but goes well beyond the typical scope of such jobs through the expectation of research experience in machine learning. Therefore, we need a person who is creative, open to new challenges, and passionate about delivering high quality results. The work include the following tasks:

• Contribute with software development across the information-driven care research program, primarily within CAISR Health and Informationsdriven nära vård, translating research prototypes into robust, deployable code

• Design and implement machine learning solutions — particularly deep learning, transformer-based and more recent architectures like Mamba — within representation learning, (vertical) federated learning, time-series analysis, and uncertainty quantification, applied to multi-source clinical and care-chain data

• Work with openEHR and related healthcare interoperability standards (e.g. OMOP, FHIR) to enable structured, semantically consistent integration of clinical and care data across regions, municipalities, and industrial partners

• Perform data science experiments and exploratory analysis to extract knowledge from healthcare datasets, including modelling of patient trajectories across the full care chain

• Design and maintain data pipelines, including relational database design, structured query optimization, and ETL processes for extracting, transforming, and integrating multi-source healthcare data

• Support the project team(s) with software documentation, code review, and validation and testing of methods and models

• Collaborate directly with stakeholders across industry, regions, and municipalities (kommuner), including participation in meetings, workshops, and joint development activities

• Contribute to teaching in foundational university courses, such as programming, when relevant

Qualifications

- M.S. degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Machine learning or related discipline.

- Strong knowledge of machine learning is required, with experience in one or more of representation learning, (vertical) federated learning, time-series modelling, uncertainty quantification, or deep learning, including transformer-based, large language models, Mamba and more.

- Programming skills in Python are required; experience with other programming languages and software development is a plus.

- Experience working with clinical or healthcare data, or in interdisciplinary healthcare projects, is required.

- Experience in one or more related areas such as multimodal data fusion, sequential and trajectory modelling, graph-based learning, explainable AI, causal inference, or privacy-preserving machine learning is required.

- Good communication skills in English and Swedish are required.

- Relevant publications in high-tier venues within AI and ML is particularly merited.

Salary

Salary is to be determined by negotiation. The application should include a statement of the salary level required by the candidate.

Application

Applications should be sent via Halmstad University's recruitment system Varbi (see link on this page).
