Job description: Let's introduce ourselves

At Volvo Cars, we are leading the transformation towards a fully electric and sustainable future. Our ambition is to be a global leader in electrification by delivering innovative electric vehicles that set new standards in performance, safety, sustainability, quality, and customer experience.

Achieving this vision requires world-class expertise in battery cell technology and a deep understanding of how cell design, materials, and manufacturing processes influence battery performance, durability, cost efficiency, and environmental impact.

The Battery Department is at the heart of this transformation. Through close collaboration across multiple engineering disciplines, we develop advanced battery solutions that power the next generation of Volvo Cars.

As part of the Battery Cell Design team, you will join a highly skilled and international group of experts dedicated to pushing the boundaries of battery technology. Working in a collaborative, innovative, and fast-paced environment, you will play a key role in shaping the future of electrification and contributing to Volvo Cars' journey towards sustainable mobility.

What you'll do

As a Quality Engineer within Battery Cell Design, you will play a key role in ensuring quality throughout the battery cell development lifecycle. Working closely with suppliers, engineering teams, and cross-functional stakeholders, you will drive quality excellence from concept to production, solving complex technical challenges and enabling continuous improvement across products and processes. In this role, you will:

  • Lead and facilitate FMEA activities for both supplier-developed and in-house battery cell products.
  • Drive root cause analyses and problem-solving using structured methodologies such as 8D, DMAIC, and other advanced quality tools.
  • Define, implement, and follow up on corrective and preventive actions, ensuring effective knowledge sharing and lessons learned across projects.
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers, design engineers, manufacturing teams, software diagnostics, field quality, and Supplier Quality Management to drive quality improvements and resolve complex issues.
  • Translate quality requirements into robust verification, validation, and analysis plans, ensuring products meet performance, safety, and reliability targets.
  • Leverage data analytics and quality metrics to monitor performance, identify trends, assess risks, and drive fact-based decision-making.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new quality methods, tools, and ways of working, helping Volvo Cars remain at the forefront of battery technology and quality engineering.

This position offers a unique opportunity to influence future battery technologies and contribute to Volvo Cars' journey toward sustainable and fully electric mobility.

What you'll bring

You are a collaborative and proactive quality professional with a passion for battery technology, automotive engineering, and sustainable mobility. You thrive in a dynamic and evolving technical environment, enjoy solving complex challenges, and are comfortable working both independently and as part of cross-functional teams. Driven by continuous improvement, you actively share knowledge, coach colleagues, and contribute to strengthening quality excellence across the organization.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you bring:

  • An MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Quality Engineering, preferably within the automotive industry, battery development, or at a battery cell supplier.
  • Strong knowledge of quality and continuous improvement methodologies, including Lean Six Sigma, DMAIC, 8D, SPC, APQP, and PPAP.
  • Hands-on experience with FMEA, root cause analysis, risk assessment, and quality improvement processes.
  • Experience analyzing complex technical data and translating insights into effective actions and sustainable improvements.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective collaborations across engineering disciplines, suppliers, and external partners.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

Meritorious experience:

  • Experience in battery cell development, battery cell manufacturing, battery chemistry, or battery systems engineering.
  • Knowledge of battery cell materials, manufacturing processes, and performance validation.
  • Experience working with suppliers in a global development and industrialization environment.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants to combine technical depth, quality expertise, and cross-functional collaboration to influence the development of next-generation battery technology and support Volvo Cars' transition towards sustainable mobility.
