Arbetsbeskrivning

Do you want to contribute to the transition towards sustainable energy systems and future power grids? Join Chalmers and work at the forefront of research in electric power systems, renewable energy, and grid stability.

We are looking for a doctoral student to join our team at the Division of Electric Power Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering.

About us

The project is under joint supervision between the Division of Electrical Power Engineering and the Division of Energy Technology at Chalmers.

Division of Electric Power Engineering conducts research within a broad range of topics in electric power technology. Our purpose is to develop interdisciplinary research areas within the university as well as with external partners. Our research is based on a solid theoretical basis and extensive experimental verifications in our laboratories as well as in the field. The power system research group is within the unit of Power Grids and Components under the division. The research group focuses on operation, control and stability questions of the power grids during the transition of the electricity system towards converter-dominated generation with high industrial electrification process. The research group and the division have close collaboration with other international research groups within the field and a strong tie with industries and grid companies.

At the Division of Energy Technology, we develop and analyse sustainable energy systems and conversion technologies for industry and society. Through strong national and international collaboration, we unite experimental and systems research to create efficient, low-emission solutions driving the transition towards carbon-neutral energy and industry. The energy systems group has extensive experience in the field of energy systems analysis and development of modelling methodologies. The research focuses on understanding the challenges and opportunities of integrating renewable energy sources and electrification of new sectors at different geographical levels. The research group participates in several large research projects such as Mistra Electrification and North European Power Perspectives. The group has close collaboration with many industries, cities, municipalities, regions, etc.

About the research project

The generation technology shift towards high level of converter-dominated generation introduces a number of stability challenges to the existing power grid infrastructure, which has been designed to accommodate synchronous machine based generation technologies. The robustness of the power system as a whole needs to be re-evaluated and the corresponding design and control criteria for the generation technologies and the power grid need to be updated. This project focuses on the modelling of a large-scale power system with high penetration of inverter-based resources, and addresses questions on the capability of the existing phasor-domain simulation tool in capturing the converter-related stability phenomena. This project is planned to be in collaboration between the field of power system control and stability analysis and of energy system analysis.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree in electric power engineering or energy system engineering
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Experience in electric power engineering for energy system engineers, or energy systems modelling for electric power engineers

You are also motivated, flexible, and able to work independently, with a collaborative mindset and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience in operation, control and stability of power systems, control of grid-connected converters
  • Experience in time domain simulation, both RMS (phasor) and EMT simulation, e.g. powerfactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, MATLAB/SIMULINK
  • Experience in electric power industries
  • Ability to conduct teaching in Swedish is advantageous but not compulsory

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Electrical Engineering. (https://www.chalmers.se/en/research/we-train-new-researchers/graduate-schools/electrical-engineering/ )
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
  • Main research tasks include: modelling of wind power plants and energy storage systems for stability analysis, large-scale system modelling and stability analysis

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
  • A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May, 2026).
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.

What we offer

  • As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about  working at Chalmers  and our benefits for employees.
  • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
  • Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburghttps://www.movetogothenburg.com/

Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence. We celebrate diversity and consider equality and inclusion as fundamental aspects of all our activities.

If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses to help you settle in.
