Your team

The Support Labs team is part of the Beamline Office group and manages MAX IV’s user support laboratories, including the Biology Lab, Chemical Labs, Sample Environment Labs, Detector Support Lab, and specialized workshops. These facilities provide visiting scientists and staff with access to specialized equipment and expert assistance for sample preparation, characterization, and sample handling. As a user facility, MAX IV welcomes a wide range of external researchers. The Support Labs therefore play an essential role in enabling users to carry out their experiments safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures and laboratory standards.

MAX IV is looking for an experienced laboratory technician to primarily support daily operations in the Bio and Chemical Labs. This is a hands-on technical role with a strong focus on laboratory operations, user support, training, and equipment maintenance rather than conducting your own research. In this position, you will help ensure that laboratories, equipment, and users operate safely and efficiently, enabling visiting scientists to carry out successful experiments at MAX IV. The daily demands of each laboratory can vary widely, so we are looking for someone who will thrive in a very adaptive environment while still adhering to good working and safety practices.

Your main work tasks will be

• Schedule and conduct lab access training for users of the Bio and Chemical Support Labs, ensuring a safe and smooth user experience.
• Provide instrument-specific training to users, overseeing instrument usage and adherence to standard operating procedures, and offering ongoing user support.
• Act as a daily point of contact for users, providing practical, hands-on support during their laboratory work.
• Perform routine laboratory functions to support scientific experiments and investigations, including maintaining a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of necessary lab supplies, ensuring stock levels are adequate for user needs across all support labs.
• Set up, test, adjust, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus, such as balances, pipettes, pH meters, and centrifuges.
• Record, analyze, and prepare reports, protocols, and summaries for experiments as well as for general laboratory documentation.
• Operate and maintain specialized equipment, including gloveboxes, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, etc.
• Maintain high standards of quality for labware and supplies.
• Enforce strict health and safety regulations.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or equivalent.
• Experience working at a large-scale research user facility in a biological or chemical laboratory environment.
• Hands-on experience as a laboratory technician working simultaneously across shared and multi-user bio or chemical laboratories, with at least one year of experience in user support.
• Practical experience providing guidance, supervision, and training in bio or chemical laboratory environments.
• Proven experience in the routine operation, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment used in bio and chemical laboratories.
• Strong ability to follow, apply, and enforce standard operating procedures and safety instructions.
• Strong ability to work independently in daily operations while coordinating closely with a small technical team.
• A clear service-oriented mindset and experience supporting scientists or users in a laboratory setting.
• Experience using laboratory management or booking systems.
• Very good spoken and written English, as daily interaction with international users is required.

Below are seen as merits

• Familiarity with biosafety practices (e.g., BSL‑2 principles) is a plus, alongside general awareness of chemical lab safety.
• Experience writing SOPs, instructions, or laboratory documentation.
• Proven experience in the routine operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment used in sample environment laboratories, i.e., 3d printers, machining tools etc.
