Arbetsbeskrivning

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. Our goal is to become the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and be operational by the end of this decade. A state-of-the-art suite of neutron scattering instruments will be made available to address a wide range of scientific fields in fundamental and materials science. Powered by the world’s most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.

Join us in shaping the future of science - from the ground up.

About the role:

We are looking for a Senior Control system Engineer to join our Hardware & Integration Group. The group is responsible for the integration of all hardware in the ESS facility into the integrated control system. This includes a diverse flora of different systems ranging from PLC systems for water flow control to fast FPGA-based data acquisition systems, all integrated towards the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System software framework.

You will be a part of a large and diverse control systems team with highly qualified, experienced and supportive colleagues working together during an intensive, developing commissioning phase. The team is divided into five work packages with great focus on dynamic collaboration, technical expertise and careful quality follow-ups. Together you will work to develop local control systems and integrate them with the EPICS framework.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and supervise work to develop new control system integrations.
  • Mentor and support engineers.
  • Develop strategies for control system development.
  • Represent ESS in the international community for controls systems for large scale research facilities.
  • Take active part in development for control system integrations, EPICS modules and software technology.

This is a permanent role which is based primarily “on-site” at the brand-new https://youtu.be/d5h4bIEfM5Q?si=W28A9wLAkYK3HOXJ.

About you:

For this role, we are seeking an experienced, senior control systems engineer who thrives on complexity and enjoys turning diverse hardware and software systems into a coherent, reliable whole. With a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering, technology or science, you are motivated by working at the forefront of large‑scale scientific infrastructure and want your expertise to have a visible, long‑term impact.

Ideally, you have a minimum of five years of prior experience in control system development and extensive hands‑on experience with EPICS. You should be confident working across the full control system stack and have a strong, well‑documented skill set in EPICS, C/C++, Python, and related software technologies. You actively contribute to control system integrations, EPICS modules, and supporting software, and you are comfortable working in an evolving commissioning environment.

For this senior engineer role, you should be well known within the controls and EPICS community with a track record of actively engaging beyond your immediate organisation. You therefore understand how to use your position at ESS to influence, contribute to, and leverage the wider EPICS ecosystem, and you have experience establishing and maintaining international collaborations within the community. Representing ESS in international forums, collaborations, and technical discussions is something you should both enjoy and excel at.

Beyond technical excellence, we’re seeking a natural technical leader, with documented experience leading and mentoring engineers, guiding development work, and helping teams deliver high‑quality solutions in demanding environments. You enjoy shaping technical direction, improving ways of working, and sharing knowledge within a collaborative and diverse team.

Experience from large‑scale research facilities, particularly in linear accelerators, neutron sources, or beamline controls, is highly valued. Familiarity with configuration management and automation tools such as Ansible/AWX would be an advantage.

Just as important as your technical background is who you are as a colleague. We’re seeking a team player with a positive, open mindset, strong problem‑solving and analytical skills, and a genuine curiosity for new challenges. You work in a structured, organised, and responsible way, with a strong commitment to safety and quality.

Fluency in spoken and written English - the working language at ESS - is required. Knowledge of Swedish or other European languages would be an asset.

To apply:

A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.

If you see yourself in what we’re looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on “apply” and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-78853 in your application.

This role requires additional background screening processes and health and safety checks, which will be performed during the recruitment process.
