Arbetsbeskrivning

Join us for an exciting doctoral journey at the Department of Electrical Engineering to shape the future of neuroprosthetics by combining human neural interfaces with cutting-edge neuromorphic engineering for brain–computer interfaces.

About us

The group led by Giacomo Valle is part of the Division of Biomedical signals and systems at the https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/e2/ at Chalmers University of Technology. We are an interdisciplinary and international team working at the interface of neuroscience, engineering, and clinical translation. Our research focuses on neural interfaces, sensory restoration, and bio-inspired computation, in close collaboration with clinical and industrial partners.

About the research project

This project focuses on developing next-generation neuroprosthetic systems combining invasive neural recording and stimulation in humans with neuromorphic processing for brain–computer interfaces. The work involves designing closed-loop systems to restore sensory and motor function, integrating real-time neural decoding with low-power, bio-inspired hardware, and validating approaches in clinical settings.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience (or equivalent)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Experience in neural signal processing, electrophysiology, or brain–computer interfaces
  • Programming experience (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or similar)
  • Personal competencies including strong collaboration skills, curiosity, and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary environment

*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience with human neural recordings or stimulation
  • Knowledge of neuromorphic engineering or embedded systems
  • Experience in machine learning for neural data

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Electrical Engineering ( https://www.chalmers.se/en/research/we-train-new-researchers/graduate-schools/electrical-engineering/ )
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
  • Conduct cutting-edge research in neuroprosthetics and neuromorphic BCI systems
  • Design and implement neural recording and stimulation experiments in humans
  • Develop real-time signal processing and closed-loop control algorithms

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
  • A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
