Riga Stradins University invites applications for a Researcher position at the Institute of Microbiology and Virology to join the research group of a tenured professor in data science.
About the Group
We are seeking a highly motivated Researcher in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) to join our research and innovation team. The candidate will contribute to designing, developing, and implementing advanced AI/ML solutions to support ongoing scientific, healthcare, and technological projects across the institute. This role involves working closely with interdisciplinary teams to transform data into actionable insights, novel tools, and impactful research outcomes.
Key responsibilities
-Develop, implement, and optimise AI/ML models (artificial intelligence/classical machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, NLP, etc.)
-Work with structured and unstructured datasets; perform data preprocessing, analysis, and validation
-Collaborate with clinicians, scientists, engineers, and project teams to integrate AI into research workflows
-Lead or contribute to scientific publications, grant proposals, and conference outputs
-Develop reproducible pipelines, documentation, and maintain code repositories
-Support AI capacity-building activities (training sessions, internal consultations)
-Ensure ethical, secure, and trustworthy AI practices in compliance with institutional and EU regulations

Required Qualifications
-Master's Degree in AI, Data Science, Computer Science, Biomed-ical Engineering, or related fields
-Experience in machine learning/deep learning projects
-Proven research or practical experience (publications, other academic and professional experience)
Essential Skills
-Proficiency in Python and major AI frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn)
-Experience with data pipelines, statistics, and model evaluation
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively
-Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
-Proficiency in Latvian and English
Desirable
-Experience in healthcare, biometrics, imaging, or digital health
-Experience with federated learning, trustworthy AI, privacy-preserving ana-lytics
-Experience with cloud platforms or HPC environments
-Knowledge of regulatory and ethical considerations in AI
