Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description: At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Job Description/Introduction: Are you interested in detector technologies and thin-film processing for Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors used in particle physics experiments? This hands-on role involves the development, processing, and characterisation of advanced detector components and thin-film coatings. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in detector processing techniques, thin-film deposition systems, and quality assurance procedures. A practical approach to problem solving and the ability to collaborate with technical teams and experiment collaborators are essential. If you are passionate about experimental detector development and thrive in a dynamic scientific environment, we would love to hear from you. Functions: - Contribute to the operation and development of thin-film processing and sputtering technologies used in detector production. - Develop and optimise processes for new materials and detector technologies used in Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors. - Support R&D activities for future detector technologies in collaboration with internal teams and international partners. - Interact with collaborators to define technical requirements and provide advice on available technologies. - Contribute to the preparation of technical documentation, offers and project specifications for detector production or processing. - Participate in detector preparation, cleaning, recovery and refurbishment procedures for gaseous detectors. Carry out detector quality assurance procedures including microscopic inspections, adhesion tests, and thickness measurements. Qualifications: Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Applied Physics, Material Science, Electronics or a related field. Experience: - Operation and process development on sputtering systems for thin-film deposition. - Surface preparation and cleaning techniques for detector materials, including processes involving chromium, titanium, copper, niobium and aluminium. Profilometer measurements for thin-film thickness and surface characterisation. - Development and optimisation of deposition recipes for new materials and substrates. - Detector cleaning and recovery techniques for Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (e.g. high-voltage cleaning of GEM detectors and recovery of Micromegas through thermal bonding). - Collaboration with external suppliers and technical partners for troubleshooting and improvement of deposition systems Technical competencies: - Production and analysis of thin-film coatings. - Fabrication of electronic circuit boards on photolithography. - Simulation, design and development of (parts of) detectors: including MPGD detectors (GEM, uRwell and Micromegas). - Operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment and systems (PVD, CNC, plating and etching lines, etc). - Use CAD design software such as UCAM or Altium. Behavioural competencies: - Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities. - Solving Problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them. - Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements. - Learning and Sharing Knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer. Language skills: Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language. Additional Information: Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organisation. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States. This position involves: - Work in Radiation Areas. - Interventions in underground installations. - Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organisation. - Exposure to carcinogens, mutagens or agents toxic to reproduction - Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. Global Benefits: - A competitive salary (tax free), increasing in line with your years of relevant experience. - 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure. - Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health insurance scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund. - Family, child and infant monthly allowances depending on your individual circumstances. - A relocation package (installation grant, removal, travel expenses) depending on your individual circumstances. - Possibility to extend your contract up to 8 years + eligibility for indefinite contract tenure.
