Arbetsbeskrivning
The Mijakovic lab at Chalmers SysBio (Mijakovic Lab | Chalmers) is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow who will contribute to AI-driven development of inhibitors for bacterial protein-tyrosine kinases. Our interdisciplinary and international group offers a supportive, collaborative and dynamic working environment.
About us
The Department of Life Sciences conducts research, innovation, and education to enable a biobased society and improve human health. We explore how biological systems, and innovative technologies can be used to convert biomass into valuable products. We use advanced computational technologies to discover how biomolecules and organisms function and interact. We pioneer new methods for prediction, prevention, diagnostics and treatment of diseases.
At the Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology biologists, chemists, mathematicians, and engineers work together with the goal of understanding and quantitatively describing the complex functioning of living organisms. We develop technologies that contribute to human and planetary health.
About the research project
Bacterial protein-tyrosine kinases (BY-kinases) control bacterial biofilm formation, and they have no homologues in humans. This makes BY-kinases a promising target for development of new antibiotics. We have recently discovered a natural mechanism of BY-kinase inhibition based on protein-protein interactions (Connection between protein-tyrosine kinase inhibition and coping with oxidative stress in Bacillus subtilis | PNAS). Based on this breakthrough, we now wish to develop synthetic BY-kinase inhibitors that will be capable of inhibiting biofilm formation in various bacterial pathogens. We are looking for an expert in generative AI who will work alongside an experimental biologist in our group, on jointly designing, testing and optimizing such BY-kinase inhibitors.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
• A Doctoral degree or equivalent in disciplines related to computational biology. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Experience with the use of generative AI to solve biological questions.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• Experience with molecular biology.
• Experience with protein structures.
• Experience with bacterial infections.
What you will do
• Carry out the computational work of the project described above.
• Collaborate tightly with the experimental biologist working in the same project, and other members of the Mijakovic lab.
• Contribute to writing peer-reviewed papers, and grant applications, if opportunity arises.
• Supervise MSc students if opportunity arises.
• If you are interested in teaching, it will be possible to arrange some participation in undergrad courses.
The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
