Position summary:
We are looking for a motivated bioprocess engineer to work on optimizing bioprocesses for production of microbial lipids.
Successful applicants will be involved in evaluation of yeast strains in bioreactors, development and optimization of bioprocess, laboratory and pilot scale sample production, process scale-up and DSP development.
The position is largely hands-on laboratory work, but may also involve organizational tasks and supervision.
Our ideal candidate should have a strong track record in developing and running microbial bioprocesses, as well as exceptional organizational skills, and a passion for using science & technology to solve tough challenges.
The candidate should also be comfortable working in the dynamic environment of a start-up company, troubleshooting challenging projects, and meeting tight deadlines.
Occasionally, some activities may require working outside of standard working hours.
The position will likely require travel within Sweden and abroad.
Responsibilities and tasks:
- Plan, set up, and run routine fermentations at lab and pilot scale to generate material for application testing and customer samples
- Assist in the design, development, and optimization of bioprocesses to improve strain performance
- Support scale‑up activities, including modelling, down‑scaling studies, tech transfer packages, and risk assessment
- Support external manufacturing partners on site to supervise process validation and production runs
- Support the optimization and implementation of downstream processes
- Work closely with strain engineering, analytics, product development, and commercial teams to align on goals and deliverables
- Ensure accurate documentation of process parameters, deviations, and batch results.
- Prepare technical reports, SOPs, and presentations
- Assist in identifying and securing IPR
Job requirements
Required qualifications:
- Candidates should hold an Msc or PhD in bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, or a similar field
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in bioprocess development and/or operations, preferably with yeasts
- Strong expertise with different bioprocesses, including batch, fed-batch, and continuous processes
- Familiarity with DSP unit operations (e.g., filtration, centrifugation, extraction, phase separation, chromatography)
- Experience with the modelling/simulation of bioprocesses
- Strong understanding of bioprocess fundamentals (e.g. mass/energy balances, oxygen transfer, scale‑up principles, and process control)
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- High attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality documentation
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Hands-on, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-moving, experimental environment
- Strong team spirit and excellent collaboration skills
- Preferably authorized to work in Sweden (Sweden/EU citizen or permanent resident)
Bonus points:
- Experience in scaling up processes from lab to pilot, demo, and/or commercial scale
- Experience with microbial lipid production
- Experience with downstream processing of lipids (extraction, refining, etc.)
- Experience with analytics (HPLC, GC-MS, etc.)
- Experience with quality control of bioprocesses (GMP, GLP standards)
- Leadership experience (supervision, project coordination with external parties, etc.)
- Work experience in a commercial setting
