Role Summary

As the Senior Backend Engineer – Mapping, Trip Planner, you will work closely with our Trip Planner product team, ABRP (A Better Routeplanner) app team, and cross-functional partners across Consumer Applications and Connected Systems to design, build, and scale the backend services that power intelligent EV routing and mapping experiences. You will play a critical role in ensuring reliable, high-performance trip planning and charger-aware navigation, providing leadership in distributed systems design, data platforms, and cloud-native architecture.

Responsibilities

● Backend Services & APIs: Design, implement, and evolve Trip Planner backend services and ABRP-specific backend-for-frontend APIs for EV planning, telemetry, and charger data management.

● Cloud Architecture & Data Platforms: Drive the modernization of our backend architecture on AWS, including distributed storage (Elasticsearch, Redis), multi-region deployments, and the Trip Planner data lake for telemetry and trip history.

● Streaming & Event-Driven Systems: Build and extend our NATS/JetStream + Protobuf-based event and data streaming framework to enable reliable, low-latency data flows across Trip Planner and mapping services.

● Reliability, Quality & Operations: Ensure high-availability, performant systems through resilient architecture, incident-ready operations, robust testing, and CI/CD pipelines for Trip Planner backend services.

● Technical Leadership & Collaboration: Shape the architectural vision, mentor engineers, and collaborate closely with the ABRP app team and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality, end-to-end Trip Planner experiences.

Qualifications:

● Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

● 5+ years of industry experience in software engineering, including 2+ years building large-scale, enterprise-grade or consumer-facing distributed systems.

● Proven experience designing, building, and operating robust, large-scale distributed systems capable of handling thousands of transactions per second.

● Deep proficiency in modern Python as a primary backend language, including production experience with Python-based services and tooling.

● Hands-on experience with distributed databases and data storage technologies, ideally including Elasticsearch and Redis or comparable systems.

● Familiarity with AWS Lambdas, Kubernetes, and/or other serverless and container-based architectures, and how to use them effectively in a high-availability environment.

● Strong understanding of high-availability and reliability patterns (redundancy, replication, load balancing, graceful degradation, failure detection, etc.).

● Experience designing and maintaining web APIs with typed interfaces and standardized patterns that keep contracts well defined, extensible, and easy for customers to integrate with.

● Solid understanding of DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and automated deployments for backend services.

● Strong grasp of caching, security, and privacy considerations, especially when working with large-scale telemetry and customer data.

● Clear, compelling communication skills with the ability to articulate technical decisions and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

● Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, contributing to iterative delivery with continuous feedback loops.

● An open, growth-oriented mindset: you are comfortable debating architectural options, giving and receiving peer code reviews, and maintaining a constructive, respectful tone while driving for the best technical outcome.
