About Volvo Penta
At Volvo Penta, we combine deep engineering heritage with bold innovation to develop world‑leading marine and industrial solutions. Our culture is built on trust, respect, and individual responsibility. We believe high performance is enabled by collaboration, curiosity, and the courage to challenge conventions — while enjoying our work together.
As a global technology leader and pioneer in propulsion, electrification, and software‑defined products, Volvo Penta is now strengthening its technology leadership. We are recruiting a Chief Engineer Electronics & Software to play a central role in defining and driving our future technology direction.
The Role
As Chief Engineer Electronics & Software, you will define, own, and govern the long‑term electronics and software architecture for Volvo Penta’s marine and industrial product portfolio. The position carries broad technical responsibility and strategic influence, shaping how electronics and software enable competitive, scalable, and sustainable products over multiple generations.
You will operate in an environment characterized by real system complexity, where electronics, software, mechanics, safety, regulation, and user experience must work seamlessly together. The role requires both strategic clarity and hands‑on technical judgement, balancing performance, safety, cost, reuse, and future extensibility.
The Chief Engineer is part of the Electronics & Software management team and reports to the Vice President. You will work across technology areas within Volvo Penta, in close collaboration with the wider Volvo Group, and together with partners and suppliers.
Electronics & Software – Architecture & Systems Engineering
The Electronics & Software organization is responsible for the end‑to‑end system architecture of Volvo Penta’s products, covering electronics, embedded software, connectivity, and user interfaces. Our scope spans the full product lifecycle, from advanced engineering and platform definition through industrialization, verification, certification, and long‑term product support.
We work across internal combustion, hybrid, electrified, fuel‑cell, and future propulsion technologies, ensuring that architectures are safe, compliant, scalable, and robust across product generations. System decomposition, interface definition, and architectural principles are central to our work, supported by model‑based development, automated verification through SIL and HIL, CI/CD pipelines, and feedback from connected products in operation.
A key part of the mission is to lead the transition toward software‑defined, platform‑based products, with increased reuse, automation, and connectivity, while delivering a high‑quality and intuitive customer experience.
Responsibilities and Expectations
In this role, you will lead the definition of the electronics and software architecture strategy and translate it into an anchored, executable roadmap. You will guide major architectural decisions and technical trade‑offs, act as a leading technical authority within Volvo Penta, and support governance of system solutions across projects and platforms.
You are expected to work closely with product management, development teams, manufacturing, and external partners, ensuring that technology choices align with customer needs, business objectives, and regulatory requirements. A strong focus is placed on collaboration, knowledge sharing, and leveraging capabilities within Volvo Penta and the broader Volvo Group.
Competence Profile
We are looking for a senior technical leader with deep experience in electronics and software, combined with the ability to operate effectively at system and platform level. You have a strong understanding of complex, safety‑critical, and regulated systems, and a proven ability to shape architecture from early concept through industrialization.
You combine a strategic mindset with a pragmatic, hands‑on approach, enabling you to move confidently between long‑term vision and near‑term execution. You are customer‑oriented, able to understand diverse application needs in marine and industrial segments, and capable of balancing competing system attributes into well‑founded solutions.
As a leader, you are collaborative and inclusive, comfortable working in flexible constellations across organizational boundaries. You inspire and challenge others with curiosity, courage, and a clear sense of direction, acting as a role model for innovative and lean technology development.
Qualifications
You have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience forming the foundation of your career. You are fluent in English and Swedish, both spoken and written, and have a strong professional track record demonstrating your technical and leadership capabilities.
We value diversity and inclusion and strive to build teams with a wide range of experiences and perspectives that strengthen our culture and performance.
