Job Mission
As a Design Engineer, you take end‑to‑end technical ownership of mechanical solutions for our vacuum conveying products and related industrial automation equipment. From early requirements and concepts, through detailed design and verification, to handover to production, you ensure that our solutions are robust, safe, cost‑efficient and manufacturable.
You will work hands‑on in 3D CAD and PDM/PLM systems to develop frames, sheet metal parts, weldments, piping/tubing, enclosures and fixtures, contributing directly to Piab’s mission of creating safe, sustainable and efficient material handling solutions for our customers.
Key Responsibilities
In this role you will:
• Take technical ownership of mechanical solutions from requirements and concept to released product in production.
• Work hands‑on in 3D CAD (preferably SolidWorks and/or Solid Edge) and PDM/PLM systems (ideally Teamcenter) with models, drawings, BOMs and change requests.
• Design industrial/machinery/automation components and assemblies (frames, sheet metal, weldments, piping/tubing, enclosures, fixtures, etc.) with a strong focus on function, safety and reliability.
• Apply good engineering practice in dimensioning, strength calculations, and material selection (steel, stainless steel, aluminium, plastics).
• Take designs from concept → prototype → industrialisation/production, securing a smooth transition to manufacturing.
• Create clear 2D drawings with appropriate tolerances, fits, surface finishes and ISO/GD&T according to relevant standards.
• Ensure quality, cost‑efficiency and manufacturability of designs, applying DFM/DFA principles.
• Troubleshoot and solve mechanical issues in design, testing/prototyping and from field/customer feedback.
• Collaborate closely with R&D colleagues (mechanical, mechatronics, software), Operations/Production, Product Management, Sales and Service to translate needs into clear design requirements.
• Contribute to improving design methods, standards, platforms/modules and technical documentation.
• Act as a technical reference and mentor for more junior mechanical designers in the team.
documentation.
• Act as a technical reference and mentor for more junior mechanical designers in the team.
Preferred Competencies
Technical skills
• Strong, hands‑on mechanical engineer with excellent 3D CAD skills, preferably SolidWorks and/or Solid Edge.
• Used to working in PDM/PLM systems, ideally Teamcenter, with structured handling of revisions, BOMs and change management.
• Solid experience in industrial / machinery / automation design (e.g. frames, sheet metal, weldments, piping/tubing, enclosures, fixtures).
• Good understanding of dimensioning, strength, and material selection for metals and plastics.
• Strong 2D drawing skills including tolerances, fits, surface finishes and ISO/GD&T.
• Familiar with DFM/DFA and designing for cost‑efficient manufacturing and assembly.
• Knowledge of relevant standards and directives for industrial machinery (e.g. safety, CE) is a plus.
• Ability to think in terms of systems and modules, not just single parts; experience with modular/product platforms and variants is valuable.
• Experience with product configurators such as Tacton is an advantage.
Experience & Education
• BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical education.
• Several years of relevant experience as a mechanical designer/engineer in industrial products, machinery, automation or related fields.
• Professional experience with 3D CAD and PDM/PLM tools in a product development environment.
• Fluency in English, both spoken and written; Swedish is an advantage.
