Mullvad VPN is a Swedish VPN company dedicated to fighting mass surveillance and censorship. We do this primarily through our VPN service and our privacy-focused web browser. Over the years, we have been pioneers when it comes to VPN technology and we intend to remain trailblazers. Everything we do is built with our users’ security and privacy first — with the ambition of making mass surveillance and censorship impractical.

We’re looking for a backend developer / sys admin to join our Services team. The team is responsible for backend services related to accounts, payments and internal APIs. We're looking for someone who enjoys working close to the metal, cares deeply about reliability, security and wants their work to genuinely protect users’ privacy.

• Develop and operate backend services that handle traffic without identifying users

• Designing infrastructure under the assumption that everything is hostile

• Keep systems boring, fast and hard to break

• Review code with a “How could this leak data?” mindset

• Have 7+ years of experience building backend systems, infrastructure or both

• Deep understanding of Linux systems

• Experience with Python or Go

• Experience with monitoring, metrics and SLOs

• Hands-on experience with Docker and containerized environments

• Good communication skills in English

• Humble and team-oriented mindset

• Like backend or infrastructure work more than buzzwords

• Understand networking well enough to be suspicious of it

• Care about security, privacy and threat models - not just feature velocity

• Prefer simple systems over “clever” ones
