The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people's health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections. Through a fruitful collaboration with the healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefits both health care and research.

At the Department of Medical Radiation Sciences, education (e.g. within the Medical Physics programme) and research are conducted in fundamental radiation physics and the medical applications of radiation.

Subject area description

Medical radiation physics (medical physics) is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses both fundamental knowledge of radiation, interaction, detectors and measurement techniques, dosimetry, radiation biology and radiation protection, as well as its applications in nuclear medicine (diagnostics and therapy), radiology (X-rays, CT, MRI), radiation therapy (external and brachy therapy), radiochemistry, environmental radiology, radiation protection preparedness and disaster radiation physics.

Duties

The duties include research in medical radiation physics for at least half of the working hours. Furthermore, the duties include actively applying for external funding to establish an independent research program and develop research collaborations within and outside the institute, at both national and international levels.

The duties also include teaching and administration primarily within the medical physics program at basic and advanced levels. Supervision of students and doctoral candidates is also included, as well as participation in the development of teaching components. Administration primarily concerns course administration.

An employee who lacks higher education pedagogical training is expected to complete such training within one year of starting the position.

For promotion, the applicant is required to have acquired proficiency in Swedish, both written and spoken, at a minimum of level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), no later than six months before the expiry of the employment as Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor). The University of Gothenburg will provide Swedish language courses, which are mandatory as part of the employment.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

A person qualified for the appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) is a person who has been awarded a PhD in medical radiation physics or another subject deemed equivalent by the employer for the position, or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within seven years of the deadline for application for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor). However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances. The reasons for the absence, its dates, and its extent must be clearly specified in the application and supported by appropriate documentation.

The ability to teach in English is a requirement.

An additional eligibility requirement is a degree in medical physics or equivalent.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer are specified in the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointment Procedure for Teachers Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

In evaluation, scientific and pedagogical skills are weighed equally and take priority. Administrative skills and the ability to colaborate are considered secondary.

When assessing scientific competence, particular importance should be given to the ability to conduct research within the subject area of the position. Special emphasis is also placed on peer-reviewed publications in national and/or international journals where scientific quality is prioritized over the quantity of output. It will also be a merit if the applicant also demonstrate an ability to obtain external national or international research funding in competition.

When assessing pedagogical proficiency, particular emphasis will be placed on a strong ability to teach and examine at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels within the subject area, as well as a good ability to supervise students at all levels of education. The proficiency should be well documented in a way that makes it possible to assess the quality of the pedagogical work.

When assessing administrative skills, experience in academic leadership is important, as well as the ability to collaborate and cooperate, both within academia and with the surrounding society.

It is an advantage if the applicant has completed a postdoctoral stay at an institution other than the one where they obtained their doctoral degree.
