About us The role is placed within the Cooperative Autonomous Systems unit at the Industrial Systems division. As a researcher, you will work closely with other researchers and project leaders in autonomous systems, communication, and data processing. In the long term, collaboration or organizational affiliation with other RISE units is possible, such as fiber optics, hardware, electronics, quantum technologies, and digital systems.
About the position You will have responsibility for leading and developing a research area in fiber optics and photonics. This includes defining the vision, strategy, and long-term direction, as well as securing external research funding. The role covers project leadership, supervision of PhD students and junior researchers, and oversight of laboratory environments. Active collaboration internally and externally is expected.
You will develop and lead an independent research program, conduct experimental and applied research, and drive prototyping and validation. Responsibilities include initiating and coordinating research proposals, acting as principal investigator, and leading interdisciplinary projects with industry, academia, and public-sector partners. Dissemination of results through reports, presentations, and publications is part of the role.
You will also identify stakeholder needs, build long-term relationships, and translate ideas into funded projects. Ensuring reliable project delivery and representing research activities in meetings, workshops, and conferences are also key tasks.
Location is Kista where the laboratory facilities are located. Hybrid work is possible up to two days per week.
Who are you? Requirements:
· PhD in fiber optics, photonics, optical communication, or a related field.
· Ability to conduct and lead research independently.
· Experience in supervising PhD students and/or students.
· Documented experience in experimental research and laboratory work.
· Excellent written and spoken English.
Merits:
· Experience in attracting external research funding.
· Collaboration with industry or the public sector.
· Experience in silicon photonics, optical interconnects, or data-center-related systems.
· Experience in EU-funded projects or large national research programs.
· Proficiency in Swedish.
You are strategic and long-term oriented, with the ability to build research activities over time. Self-driven and proactive, you take strong ownership of your research area. You thrive in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments and approach challenges with confidence. Skilled in communication, you build strong relationships with both academia and industry. Structured and responsible, you ensure excellence in project execution and laboratory work.
Are we a good match? RISE offers a unique opportunity to shape and develop an independent research area with a high degree of freedom and responsibility. The role provides access to advanced laboratories, strong national and international networks, and close collaboration with industry and society. The combination of research freedom, applied impact, and long-term competence building is a key strength of the position.
