Arbetsbeskrivning

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application! We are looking for a PhD student in theoretical physics with a focus on the theory of magnetic materials. Your work assignments Your tasks will be to carry out research using advanced theoretical and computational methods within quantum mechanics and statistical physics with the aim to design alloys for rare-earth-free high-performance permanent magnets. You will use computational techniques developed in our group to accurately capture the coupling between magnetism, lattice vibrations and disorder to search for novel magnetic materials. Your studies will include theoretical analysis, implementation of methods in computer codes, use of state-of-the-art high-performance computers in Sweden and in Europe, application of machine-learning and AI techniques, and collaborations with experimental partners in Sweden and internationally. As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time. This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more: https://wise-materials.org All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School https://wise-materials.org/research-school/, an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry. Your qualifications You have graduated at Master’s level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in theoretical physics, applied physics or adjacent subjects. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you. You should have an excellent knowledge of physics, especially quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and solid-state physics, preferably a master's thesis in modeling of magnetic materials using first-principles methods. Good knowledge of programming is required. Meritorious experience for the position is demonstrated knowledge of Git, Python, Bash and VASP. Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required. You should be able to work independently and be a contributing member of the research group. Your workplace You will work in the Theoretical Physics Division: https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/ifm/teofy. The division conducts research as well as undergraduate and postgraduate education in theoretical physics with a focus on materials research. The department employs around forty researchers, postgraduate students and teachers. You will be employed in the unit Theory of Disordered Materials: https://liu.se/en/research/theory-of-disordered-materials You will collaborate with the division's other employees and doctoral students with tasks related to your own. The employment When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances. Starting date by agreement.   Salary and employment benefits The salary of PhD students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression. More information about employment benefits at Linköping University is available here. Union representatives Information about union representatives, see Help for applicants.
