With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.Research Assistant in Aquatic Animal Welfare At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment. The department is placed at two different localities: in Natrium at Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at the Kristineberg marine research station operated by the Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg. You can read more about our employment benefits here.   Project description This research project aims to investigate how to improve the welfare of crustaceans and fishes using techniques in animal behaviour and physiology. You will provide assistance in experiments where the use of analgesia on reducing poor welfare in aquatic animals will require skills in video recording, behavioural analysis and metabolic assays. You will assist in daily aquatic animal husbandry and care as well as occasional field trips to collect animals.   Duties  Techniques used within the project include animal care, video recording, behavioural analysis, physiological assays (glucose and lactate), inputting data into Excel spreadsheets and collection of animals within the local area.   Qualifications  We are looking for a motivated individual for a position as a research assistant in aquatic animal biology with a special focus on animal welfare.  Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology. • Experience in the care of aquatic animals, including fish and crustaceans. • Proficiency in using video camera equipment and conducting behavioural analysis. • Experience with laboratory assays for measuring glucose and lactate. • Swedish Laboratory Animal Science certificate in fish. • Valid driving license. • Proficiency in using Excel spreadsheets. Desirable qualifications for the employment are conducted previous research in the field of aquatic animal welfare. As a research assistant, you will have a broad role with supporting various tasks in aquatic animal welfare research projects. There are many contact points, and it is important that you are service oriented, flexible and enjoy collaborating with others. Good communication skills are vital as you will work within an active team of researchers. Excellent communication skills, written and spoken, in English are necessary since we work in an international environment.
