The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a partnership organization of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. ESS is currently looking for a Technician to work within the Materials Science and Physics Support (MSPS) group which is part of the Science Directorate. The MSPS group is in charge of developing, procuring, installing and maintaining sample environment systems within the fields of low temperature (cryogenic), high pressure, high temperature, magnetism and mechanical processing.
As part of the MSPS team at ESS, your primary task will be to support the MSPS engineers in building, developing, integrating and later operating and maintaining, innovative sample environment systems. Such systems are required for experiments throughout the ESS instrument suite, but during your first years at ESS you will focus on sample environment systems needed to enable first science when the facility enters operation.
About the role:
Your main responsibilities and tasks will include - but are not limited to:
• Test, configure, maintain and repair sample environment systems;
• Install equipment on the neutrons instrument with the support of the instrument team during operation;
• Support your colleagues within and outside the MSPS group, as well as neutron instruments personal and users. This work will include on-call duties at night and during week-ends;
• Take care of the tools and workshops;
• Contribute to the development of new sample environment systems.
About you:
To thrive with us in the MSPS Group, we would expect you to have the following background:
• Bachelor degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g. cryogenics, mechanics, instrumentation, vacuum technology) or equivalent technical experience;
• At least 2 years of professional experience;
• Hands on experience in at least one of the MSPS technical field (cryogenics, high temperature, magnetic field, high pressure, mechanical processing, vacuum technology);
• Good mechanical skills and a genuine desire to gain more advanced knowledge, such as in TIG welding, brazing, industrial drawing;
• Fluent in English both in speech and writing;
• Willingness to learn.
Additional skills can include:
• Previous experience in supporting users at large facilities and/or research labs;
• Previous hands-on experience in developing, modifying and /or repairing complex scientific equipment;
• Knowledge of CAD, welding, mechanical machining, programming (python, LabView).

You are reliable, proactive, have a supporting mindset of helping colleagues and users, have the ability to plan and organise your work and are willing to learn new things. On-calls and outside normal working hours have to be expected. If necessary, you will be given the possibility to gain additional professional experience at other scientific facilities in the world. Consequently, travels for a duration ranging from 1 week to 1 month, outside Sweden have to be expected within the first 2 years of the contract.
The working language of ESS is English so fluency in English is required.
