Researcher in mercury bioaccumulation

Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment We are looking for a person who has extensive experience of and interest in analyzing mercury isotopes. About the position We are seeking a researcher who will work with the project: ”Impact of Swedish peatland rewetting on mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in downstream ecosystems: process quantification using Hg stable isotopes”. Peatland rewetting may restore many ecosystem services, but rewetting also causes fundamental changes in soil biogeochemical properties, that can possibly result in undesired effects. A notable example is the potentially enhanced export of mercury (Hg) from the restored anaerobic environments to downstream lakes. This project will use a novel Hg stable isotope tool to improve the fundamental understanding of three key aspects of the linkages between Hg in peatlands and downstream lake ecosystems: • What processes affect Hg release from rewetted peatlands? • Does changing peat hydrology alter Hg loads to downstream lakes? • How much does Hg in fish originate from the peat soils in the landscape? Your profile You must have a PhD in (bio)geochemistry, preferably with a focus on the environmental fate of mercury, or closely related fields. Valuable merits are, • Scientific experience with analysis of natural abundance mercury isotopes • Development of laboratory protocols for analyzing natural abundance mercury isotopes • Documented skills in use of natural abundance mercury isotopes to infer mercury redox transformation processes • Expertise in dating peat cores We require documented capability of autonomous scientific research work and skills in writing scientific publications and reports in English. Very good command of the English language, both written and spoken, is required. Personal qualities including the ability to collaborate, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills are also selection criteria. About us The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, microbial ecology as well as on environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology. The department has about 150 employees, of which approximately half are researchers/doctoral students and the other half are technical and administrative staff. Through our focus on the interaction between humans, animals and ecosystems and the responsible use of natural resources, we contribute to sustainable societal development and good living conditions on our planet. Our main campuses are located in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, however, the university also operates at research stations, experimental forests and teaching sites throughout Sweden. SLU has around 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and doctoral students and a turnover of over SEK 3 billion. We are investing in attractive environments on all of our campuses. We strive to provide a work environment characterised by inclusivity and gender equality, where different experiences generate conversations between people and pave the way for science, creativity and development. Therefore, we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
