Within Ericsson Research, Research Area Artificial Intelligence (AI) is responsible for pushing the AI frontiers within telecom, combining machine learning, reasoning methods, generative AI, and trustworthy AI tools, and techniques to drive competitive performing products and intelligent autonomous operations in large complex telecom systems.

Position Summary:

The main objective of this PhD research position is to create novel methods for LLM trustworthiness to improve its trustworthiness, especially, how to leverage the transparency to improve its reliability, and how to systematically create explanation regarding the applied telecom use case. The research will be performed on the topic of trustworthiness of Large Language Models (LLMs), making progress towards providing a reliable system that generates correct outcomes and can explain how the agent arrived at a certain decision; why an action is taken by the AI system.

The research will focus on reliability, correctness and transparency of LLMs using explainable AI (XAI) algorithms, investigating how XAI for LLMs could be applied in digital intelligent networks and how to systematically create explanations regarding LLM solutions in future networks. The aim is to incorporate trust aspects specially to meet the requirements of reliable and correct outcome and improving transparency at different levels of LLMs. With its strong focus and engagement in telecom networks, this project has the potential to make important and strategic scientific and industrial impact.

What you will do


• Join our Trustworthy AI team working as an industrial PhD student. The job consists of 80% of PhD studies and 20% duties at Ericsson as a researcher.

• Contribute to the Trustworthy AI Research technologies/results from Research Area AI.

• Perform research on the topic of trustworthiness of Large Language Models (LLMs)

• Do research in an international team of world-class researchers with different backgrounds and experiences to develop solutions and concepts for 5G+ and 6G network evolution with focus on AI.

• Contribute to novel research results on the topic of trustworthiness of Large Language Models (LLMs) which can lead to rapid and iterative development of high-quality AI applications. This includes working with solutions for 5G+ and 6G networks, IoT and data and machine learning systems.

• Identify and propose/drive research activities in Trustworthy AI research based on the gaps.

• Engage with external ecosystem (academia, technology leaders, open source, etc.) to develop skills and enhance technology portfolio.

• Stay updated with the latest trends in research and technology, contributing with scientific publications, patents, and technology innovation.

• Help to push thought leadership by develop new and apply/ extend existing, concepts, methodologies, techniques for cross functional initiatives.

Admission Requirement

As the position is intended to be part of an industrial PhD program, in collaboration with academia, we require the applicant to have an approved external funding from SSF for admission.
