The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. About the role We are looking to appoint a Systems Engineer to join our central Engineering Management Group, part of the Technical Directorate. In this position you will drive and support systems engineering activities within our overarching ESS development organization and provide essential system engineering guidance for engineering project activities for the organization throughout the engineering lifecycle. You will play a crucial role in developing, maintaining and implementing our governing systems engineering processes such as engineering discipline handbooks, lower-level procedures and guidelines as well as maintaining and implementing our Configuration Management framework. As an overarching ESS systems Engineer you will take the lead on maintaining system documentation for our top-level systems, ensuring clarity and consistency in ESS operations. You will also perform holistic analyses, identifying issues, guide and assist in solutions and implementations, as well as support ESS sub-projects in development, throughout the project life cycle. You will support the development organization in various configuration management and requirement management activities, additionally, you will provide training and support to staff on systems engineering activities. This is a full-time, permanent position with a 6 months’ probationary period, based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. We need someone who is fundamentally interested in systems engineering holistic approach, requirements and configuration management and who is eager to not only develop themselves, but also enjoys supporting and educating others. Key requirements for this role include: • Master of Science in engineering or equivalent. • At least 5 years of experience from working in the field of systems engineering. • Skills in system development e.g. requirement engineering. • Experience in the implementation of requirement engineering activities within a complex project. • Experience in analysis of system architecture, system decomposition and system interface development. • Experience in system verification and validation. • Experience in configuration management. • Experience in large scale system development. • Experience of working in an international environment. In addition, experience in the following would be a real advantage: • Requirements database. • Jira & Confluence from Atlassian. • Experience from research facilities and/or industry. • Knowledge and experience of application of relevant international standards Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, as it is the working language at ESS. Knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage. What can we offer?
