Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students. In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. At the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering, the university has brought together research and education in electrical engineering, space technology, and computer systems science. We are now looking for a PhD student in Electronic Systems with focus on electromagnetic compatibility in electrified airport environment, who can contribute to our growing activities in electronics at the EISLAB division. We carry out research in the areas of electronic systems, machine learning and cyber-physical systems. The Electronics systems group focuses on electrodynamic simulation, electronics design, and measurement technology. The research and teaching conducted is supported by high-quality infrastructure with state-of-the-art laboratories for electromagnetic compatibility, microelectronics and photoacoustics.  Subject description  Electronic systems include electronics design, measurement technology and electromagnetic compatibility for control, monitoring and instrumentation of technical processes and systems, with close connection to applications and applied research.  Project description  The environmental effect of flight on climate change has become a major driving force for the development of electric aircraft, where the focus currently is on safety, battery technology and development of drive systems. Today's certified electric airplanes carry a maximum of two passengers for 100 kilometers, but development is progressing quickly. The Swedish company Heart Aerospace is developing a hybrid aircraft for 30 passengers to be in service by 2028, and at Skellefteå airport pilot training is being conducted with the electric aircraft Pipistrel Velis Electro. Associated charging infrastructure is expanded with charging stations, solar parks and energy storage. At Luleå University of Technology, our group is involved in driving the area forward via projects and collaborations with authorities and local actors.  The ongoing development has actualized the issue of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and compatibility (EMC) in the airport environment. Electric aircraft and chargers, like many other electronic systems, are based on switching power electronics. In addition to intended fundamental tones, this generates a considerable amount of harmonics which can leave the system as radiated disturbances. Effects from these disturbances in a future introduction of electric aircraft and chargers are still largely unmanaged and unknown. The project will contribute to the introduction of electric aircraft by studying electromagnetic interference from electric aircraft and its connection to airport systems. Especially the airport's system for communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) in the frequency range 100 – 400 MHz is of interest. We are now looking for PhD students who, together with the support of our team of researchers, want to develop into independent researchers in this field. As a doctoral student, you will have a close collaboration with researchers and staff at the university as well as with experts in measurement and modeling of electromagnetic emission in Sweden and internationally.  Duties  As a PhD student you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. In addition, you can have the opportunity to try the teacher role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects.  Your qualifications  We are looking for committed people who have:  - A solid educational background, master's degree or equivalent, in electrical engineering, physics or related fields.  - Good practical knowledge regarding measurement technology and laboratory work.  - Basic knowledge of electromagnetic field theory and signal processing.  - Effective communication skills to convey complex ideas with clarity and impact.  For further information about a specific subject see * General syllabus for the Board of the faculty of science and technology  Most employees at the subject Electronic systems are currently men, therefor we encourage female applicants.  Further information  A position as PhD student is time limited to 4 years, teaching and other departmental duties may apply up to 20 % of full time. The position is placed on campus Luleå. Admission date by agreement.  For further information you may contact: Jonny Johansson, Professor (+46)920-49 1703 [email protected]  Union representatives:  SACO-S Kjell Johansson (+46)920-49 1529 [email protected]  OFR-S Lars Frisk, (+46)920-49 1792 [email protected]  In case of different interpretations of the English and Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence.  Application  We prefer that you apply for this position by clicking on the apply button below. The application should include a CV, personal letter and copies of verified diplomas from high school and universities. Mark your application with the reference number below. Your application, including diplomas, must be written in English or Swedish.  Closing date for applications: 2024-08-30  Reference number: 2283-2024
