Production Geologist in open-pit mine

Your role

We are looking for a Production Geologist to join the geology workgroup in the mine planning team at Svappavaara. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the extracted ore and crusher feed quality control through the implementation of open-pit GC best practices.

Working closely with other geologists, mine engineers, surveyors, and rock mechanics engineers, you are part of a team with the goal of delivering the correct quality ore in the right time. Your tasks will include conducting geological field mapping in the open-pit mines, overseeing ore sampling procedures, analysing data to identify ore grade variations, and providing guidance to operational teams for optimal ore extraction.

About the team

The mine planning department in Svappavaara is responsible for planning the extraction of ore deposits in the area, both in the short and long term. Here, we employ surveying engineers, rock mechanics engineers, geologists, and mining engineers. Much of the work is done through collaboration within the mine planning section and between different departments.

LKAB's open-pit mines are located in Svappavaara, about forty kilometers southeast of Kiruna. In our open-pit mines, we extract iron ore by drilling, blasting, crushing, and concentrating ore for pellet production. What you bring

As a candidate, you should possess strong analytical skills and be adept at interpreting geological data to support production planning decisions. Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team are crucial.

Additionally, we see that you have:

  • Two years of practical experience in open-pit mining operations, particularly in magnetite deposits.
  • Proven experience in grade control and familiarity with the Maptek Suite, including Vulcan, are highly desirable.
  • Proven practical knowledge and hands-on experience in production geology, including ore sampling, mapping, and interpretation of geological data.
  • Fluent proficiency in English and excellent computer skills are a requirement. A basic understanding of Swedish is advantacious.
