Senior Lecturer in Pharmacokinetics

Reference number PAR 2024/512

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Employment is in the Unit for Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism, at the Department of Pharmacology. The department currently consists of 15 research groups, conducting research on the mechanisms of action, disposition, therapeutic use, and development of drugs, as well as teaching in these subjects at the Sahlgrenska Academy's various educational programs.

The unit for pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism is focused on research and postgraduate training, and handles teaching in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, drug discovery and development, and pharmaceutical toxicology at basic and advanced levels, especially within the Pharmacist and Pharmacy Dispenser programs. Teaching is conducted in Swedish and English.

The research at the Unit for Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism ranges from mechanistic studies of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes at the cellular and molecular level, to studies of drug disposition in the body as a basis for rational treatment of different patient populations. Special focus areas are the disposition and function of new therapeutic modalities, as well as optimization of drug treatment from a pharmacogenetic perspective using pharmacometric and systems pharmacology modelling. The unit has strong ties to pharmaceutical industry and has a central role in the national infrastructure for therapeutic oligonucleotides, OligoNova. For more information about the activities at the unit, see the department's website https://www.gu.se/en/neuroscience-physiology/about-us/pharmacology.

Computer-based modeling of drug disposition is an important element of the unit's research, for example at the mechanistic level through molecular dynamics simulation and other computational chemistry methods, as well as systems pharmacology and pharmacometric modeling. In pharmacometrics, models are used for quantitative analysis of interactions between drug and patient - especially regarding pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and disease progression – with the aim of integrating such knowledge during drug development, to evaluate drug therapy and understand causes of variability in patient populations, or to support the design of clinical studies of drug disposition and efficacy.

Subject area

Pharmacokinetics

Subject area description

The subject pharmacokinetics refers to the study of drug disposition in the body and the connection between drug exposure and desired and unwanted effects. This includes, for example, in vitro/in vivo/clinical studies and computer-based modeling and simulation techniques to elucidate molecular and cellular mechanisms influencing drug exposure and effect, and quantitative studies of the link between exposure and effect at the individual and population level.

Advanced computational techniques have a central role in the subject area, including mechanistic analyzes through molecular simulation and computational chemistry calculations, as well as quantitative analyses of exposure and effect through systems pharmacology and pharmacometric modeling.

Duties

The duties consist mainly of research and teaching within the research area of pharmacokinetics. The applicant is expected to establish and conduct research within the scope of the position. As natural parts of the duties, applying for external research grants and some administration within teaching and research are included. Assignments within the department, the institute and the faculty may be part of the employment.

Duties also include teaching and examination at first, second and third cycle levels, supervision and examination of degree projects, as well as course development, course management and course responsibility within the Pharmacist and Pharmacy Dispenser programs where the applicant’s professional experience will be applicable in relevant teaching situations.

If the applicant does not have Swedish as their mother tongue, they will be given the opportunity and expected to learn Swedish during a 3-year period from the date of employment.

Eligibility

Eligibility for employment as a teacher is specified in the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

Doctoral degree in pharmacokinetics or other subject that the employer deems equivalent for the position and demonstrated teaching skills. Ability to teach in English is a requirement. As teaching at the Institute also takes place in Swedish, the ability to teach in Swedish is expected to be acquired no later than 3 years after the start of employment.
