We welcome applications for a PhD position in condensed matter theory within the research group led by Matthias Geilhufe at Chalmers University of Technology. Our group primarily focuses on quantum materials, exploring aspects such as the symmetry and topology of ordered phases of matter, non-equilibrium dynamics, and stochastic processes in materials. The PhD position has a duration of 4 years, with a starting date August 2024 or shortly thereafter. This opportunity is part of a research initiative on emergent magnetic phenomena due to the coupling of spin and laser-excited chiral phonons. The overarching goal is to derive coupling mechanisms between phonons and spin, e.g., based on inertial effects and estimate their strengths and impact in realistic setups. This information is crucial for understanding the complex phase diagram of materials outside of equilibrium. Information about the division The division of Condensed Matter and Materials Theory constructs models for and develops an understanding of a large variety of materials and other condensed matter systems, sometimes leading to new materials, novel technological devices, or structured media with properties beyond those occurring naturally. To this end, we combine theoretical, methodological and computational techniques, often in close collaboration with local and international experimental groups. Major responsibilities As a member of our research team, you will actively contribute to scientific projects alongside national and international collaborators, participating in presentations, discussions, and publications. You will be provided with opportunities to broaden your expertise through specialized courses or participation in international summer/winter schools. Moreover, you will play a role in the supervision and teaching of Bachelor and Master students. We are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive research environment, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds. We are committed to supporting your career development and providing opportunities to broaden your expertise. Moreover, we prioritize personal well-being, offering benefits for health and fitness activities, along with flexible part-time work options to accommodate individual needs. Qualifications To be eligible for this position, you must hold a Master's degree in physics or a related field, or be in the process of completing your Master's degree (or equivalent). Additionally, experience in one of the following areas is considered advantageous: i) non-equilibrium physics; ii) many-body theory; iii) condensed matter theory. To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses. Contract terms Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of four years. We offer Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.  Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
