Växa Sverige is looking for a Geneticist with Technical Lead

Växa Sverige has the national responsibility for the official commitments within breeding, such as breeding values, breeding goals and herdbooking for our largest dairy and beef breeds.

Except our national commitment, we are also a part of Nordic and international breeding networks, such as Nordic breeding evaluation (NAV), European Bovine Evaluation (EBE) and Interbull. Växa Sverige is continuously involved in several development projects with the aim to enhance the genetic performance of our cattle and thus ensuring a sustainable and competitive breeding that benefit the agricultural sector in Sweden as well as abroad.

We are now looking for a Geneticist who will play a key role in both international collaboration and national team development. Approximately 75% of the role will be dedicated to contributing to the international EBE team, working on the development and implementation of a joint European genetic evaluation. This includes collaborating with partners across countries and supporting the continuous improvement of methodologies and data integration.

The remaining part of the role will involve acting as a Technical Lead within the Swedish team. In this capacity, you will support and guide colleagues in technical matters, contribute to knowledge sharing, and help ensure high-quality delivery of projects and analyses.

This position requires a strong background in genetics, the ability to work in an international environment, and a collaborative mindset.

 We think that the position suits you if you:

  • Have a higher academic degree within genetics
  • Have previous experience of breeding evaluation
  • Are good at collaboration and relationship building.
  • Have a good command of English 
  • At least three years of work experience within the area of genetics

 We value personal skills highly, such as motivation, strong engagement and social skills. The work is largely independent although you will actively plan and pursue your tasks in consultation with your manager and your colleagues.

 Employment and location

Full time until further notice. The position is preferably situated in Uppsala but other locations are open to discussion. Salary according to agreement.

-- Role description Geneticist - Technical lead -- The Geneticist – Technical Lead is responsible for providing technical expertise in genetics while also leading the technical development, implementation, and quality assurance of genetic analyses, data pipelines, and related methodologies for development projects at NAV and Växa. The role also includes overseeing and providing technical support and ensuring the quality of routine NAV genetic evaluations conducted at Växa.

In addition, the Technical Lead supports the interpretation of results from genetic evaluations and communicates or supports communicating their implications to breeding advisors and farmers. This includes explaining the nature of changes in genetic evaluations and their expected impact on breeding decisions and herd management.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical development and implementation of genetic analyses, evaluation models, and genomic tools on Nordic development projects (and as experienced geneticist contribute to EBE developments)
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and integrity of genetic data and analyses of development projects led by Växa
  • Coordinate and guide the technical work of geneticists and collaborators involved in genetic evaluations.
  • Act as the technical point of contact for internal teams and external partners regarding genetic methods and results.
  • Oversee the development, validation, and documentation of genetic models and pipelines.
  • Give final recommendations, support and technically contribute to the integration of new data processes at Växa to provide farmers with the latest updates in genetics and genomics.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that genetic results are correctly interpreted and implemented in breeding strategies or operational systems.

 Competences

  • Strong expertise in quantitative genetics, genomics, and genetic evaluation methods
  • Ability to interpret, maintain, and debug shared codebases developed by multiple contributors
  • Experience developing and running workflows in Python, SAS, R, and Bash scripting within a high-performance computing (HPC) environment managed with SLURM.
  • Advanced data analysis and statistical modelling skills in quantitative genetics.
  • Ability to lead technical projects and coordinate cross-functional work.
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex genetic concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • High attention to data quality, reproducibility, and scientific rigor.
