RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is looking for a Senior researcher in Quantum life science with a focus on Fundamental quantum biology. You will join the Computer Science department at RISE, home to a leading AI lab in Sweden, and work in the Data Platform and Scalable Systems unit which does research in space, quantum, and high-performance computing. Together with partners and customers from industry and academia, we develop sustainable systems at the frontier of applied science. The role in Fundamental quantum biology is a strategic opening in the unit.
About the role In this role, you will work to connect quantum technology and biological systems. This role is pivotal in connecting RISE’s expertise in quantum sensing and quantum information processing with a focus on delivering value in real-world life science applications, including dual-use scenarios.
A central part of the work involves exploring novel technological synergies in fundamental quantum biology and establishing proof-of-concept pilot projects. This includes investigating how quantum effects such as entanglement, tunnelling, and coherence can be harnessed for innovations in drug discovery, diagnostics, and biodefense. You will play a central role in applying for and leading proof-of-concepts grants, benchmarking hybrid quantum-classical algorithms and proposed solutions against classical state-of-the-art methods, and helping to establish RISE as a key player in the Swedish and European quantum life science ecosystem.
The position is based in either Stockholm-Kista or Gothenburg. We follow a hybrid work model. The work involves travels, mainly within Sweden and the EU.
Key responsibilities
Develop and test methods for applying quantum information and sensing to biological systems.
Manage projects and lead work-packages in both Swedish and European research programs (eg, Horizon Europe, EDF).
Apply a deep understanding of open quantum system, specifically Lindblad dynamics and noise-assisted transport, to biological use cases.
Work with partners in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and defense sectors to identify sensing and diagnostic needs.
Who are you?
We are looking for a researcher with cross-disciplinary skills: someone who possesses the rigour of a quantum physicist or chemist and the intuition of a biologist. You thrive in the complexity of biological environments and know how to find quantum signals hidden within the noise. You are structured, enjoy collaborative problem-solving, and motivated to see research put into practice.
Requirements:
PhD in quantum physics, quantum chemistry or biophysics with focus on quantum dynamics or information.
Professional experience: at least two years of work experience or a postdoctoral research fellowship, preferably within a related multidisciplinary context.
Theoretical expertise: a solid understanding of the Lindblad master equation, non-Markovian dynamics, and decoherence in biological systems.
Computational skills: experience in benchmarking quantum or quantum-inspired algorithms against classical methods.
Project experience: experience in coordinating research and writing successful funding applications.
Communication: excellent communication skills in English and Swedish, both written and spoken
Additional merits:
Hands-on experience in the lab environment (eg, a bio lab or quantum sensing)
Understanding of molecular recognition (how molecules interact) and cellular signalling.
Personal qualifications:
Strong ability to work independently and take responsibility for different stages of the research process
Clear and effective communication skills in collaborative settings and in the presentation of research results
An analytical and problem-solving mindset, with the ability to structure and address complex scientific questions
Are we right for each other?
At RISE, we like different and we are convinced that diversity contributes to an innovative environment where we together challenge boundaries and develop new knowledge for the future. With us, passionate problem solvers meet to solve some of the world's most important, and perhaps fun, problems. We cannot promise you an easy job, but what we can promise you is a bunch of committed colleagues and some really exciting societal and industrial challenges to tackle. You will work in a dynamic environment that gives you development opportunities both professionally and personally. With us, you get the opportunity to make a real difference. Welcome to the research institute and innovation partner for the entire of Swedish.
Welcome with Your Application!
