We are looking for an Interim Legal Counsel to join the Expansion Legal Team in Stockholm for one year with start date in March or April.


Job Description

WHAT YOU WILL DO

As Legal Counsel in the Expansion Legal Team, you will play a pivotal role in defining and executing the strategic legal agenda across our global store portfolio in over 70 different markets. You will work with global and regional stakeholders to align commercial requirements with global legal standards and safeguard these in our contracts. Acting as a global centre of excellence, you will partner with local market counsels to foster best practices across regions, ensuring consistency and compliance with the strategies you help define for each region. Additionally, you will lead training and knowledge-sharing initiatives to strengthen legal capabilities and champion AI and tech-enabled solutions to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.

This role offers a broad global scope, providing opportunities to drive impactful initiatives and contribute to significant business outcomes.

Your main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Legal Advisory and Contract Management:

  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance to the Commercial Expansion team, offering insights on a diverse array of issues associated with international expansion.
  • Identify and assess legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Navigate regulatory landscapes and ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and standards impacting the retail industry.
  • Develop, review, support in negotiations and negotiate a comprehensive range of commercial tenancy contracts essential for expansion initiatives, such as lease agreements, amendments, revenue sharing agreements etc.
  • Ensure that contractual arrangements entered at a market level align with the H&M Groups’ strategic objectives and legal requirements.
  • Oversee and provide support in local litigations and legal proceedings by providing strategic advice to the local legal teams.

Legal Operations and Corporate Governance:

  • Foster collaborative relationships with various departments, advise and support them and help set up ways of working where required to streamline contract negotiation, signing and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Ensure seamless integration of legal considerations into the broader expansion strategy through coaching and training market counsels and being their point of contact at Head Office.
  • Develop and maintain systems for managing legal documentation, contracts and information.
  • Ensure correct representation of deals to the board or decision-makers.
  • Oversee the proper execution of documents.
  • Lead and support with the implementation of centrally driven key projects, including legal AI and tech initiatives, across our markets.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

As a Legal Counsel in the Expansion Legal Team, you will belong to the Expansion Department at Commercial Development & Growth.

Commercial Development & Growth is a global function within the H&M brand with the mission to set and deliver on the global customer experience strategy to strengthen the brand and enable profitable sales. The function develops, expands and optimises all sales channels while securing conditions for efficient operations leveraged by tech and strong collaboration across the organisation.

The Expansion Department owns the inorganic omni growth strategies, drives leasing, portfolio management and partner strategies in our 70+ markets. In this role, you will collaborate closely with both global and regional stakeholders.


Qualifications

WHO YOU ARE

We are looking for people with:

  • A law degree.
  • 5 – 10 years of legal experience, preferably within real estate.

And people who have:

  • Exceptional communication skills, required for interactions with markets, cross functional teams, Global Landlords and senior stakeholders.
  • Understanding of risk assessment and ability to communicate associated consequences to decision makers in a simple and straight forward way.
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution, especially in situations with conflicting interests.
  • Comfortable with decision-making, even in ambiguous circumstances and tight timelines.
  • Ability to undertake a thorough review of contracts and agreements.
  • Analytical skills for breaking down arguments or theories, conceptualizing ideas, and providing well-supported conclusions.
  • Prioritization skills to identify and focus on key goals and tasks.
  • Strategic thinking in defining and implementing effective long-term plans in line with the vision and strategy of the legal team.
  • Strong interest in leveraging technology and digital tools, including legal AI solutions, to enhance efficiency and quality in legal work.
  • Capability to plan and timely execute projects that span across multiple regions.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This is a full-time temporary position for 1 year, commencing on March or April, 2026. You will report to Head of Expansion Legal.
