Arbetsbeskrivning
We are looking for a postdoc to join our team at the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Mathematical Sciences, and contribute to research on stochastic and statistical models for large-scale shape variability and interaction.
About us
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a research and teaching environment that is both academically strong and collegial, where mathematical theory, education, and engagement with society are pursued in close connection. We are Sweden's largest mathematical department, with around 200 dedicated staff. The department is a joint venture between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, bringing together an engineering-oriented technical university and a general research university with close links to a major university hospital.
Within the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, research spans computational mathematics, optimisation, biomathematics, statistics, and data science, with sustained links to engineering, the natural sciences, and applications in medicine and life sciences.
About the research project
The research project develops stochastic and statistical models for large ensembles of interacting shapes. Motivating examples include the spatio-temporal dynamics of sweat droplets, interacting cellular or tissue shapes, and geometric structures arising in vegetation such as tree canopies. The work combines spatial point process models for the emergence and arrangement of objects (including birth-death dynamics, merging, and non-overlap constraints) with methods from shape analysis, in particular stochastic dynamics for shape change. A further aspect of the project is learning and calibrating these models from data using data-driven inference methods.
Who we are looking for
Required qualifications
• A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with others.
• Experience relevant to stochastic modelling, applied probability, statistical modelling, or closely related areas.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
• Experience of teaching at undergraduate or master’s level, and an interest in further development within teaching and education.
What you will do
• You will conduct independent research that contributes to the aims of the project, while further developing your research profile in stochastic modelling and applied mathematics.
• Opportunities to supervise Bachelor’s, Master’s, and/or PhD students.
• Opportunities to contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and master’s levels.
The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years at Chalmers University of Technology.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
What we offer
• As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
