Arbetsbeskrivning
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.
We are now looking for a PhD researcher with a genuine interest in immunology to join the Thorén lab at the Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research at the University of Gothenburg. We offer a friendly and stimulating environment in a highly dynamic research area.
In the Thorén lab we have a broad interest in human Natural killer (NK) cell biology. The research group comprises a mix of clinical and preclinical scientists and our research activities range from projects aiming at identifying novel NK cell receptor ligands to clinical immunotherapy trials. The researcher will be part of the Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research which comprises 20-25 research groups focusing on different aspects of cancer biology.
Duties
• Plan, carry out, and analyze experiments that elucidate how NK cells recognize and eliminate cancer cells, with a focus on activating receptor–ligand mechanisms.
• Establish and maintain cell lines and primary immune cells, including work with NK cells (isolation, activation/stimulation, and functional readouts).
• Perform functional immunological assays.
• Genetic manipulation of cells for hypothesis-driven validation of targets:
• CRISPR/Cas9 knock-out/knock-down (including design and validation),
• siRNA-based gene regulation,
• analysis of functional consequences in co-culture systems.
• Contribute to manuscripts, abstracts, grant applications, and internal reports.
• Supervise students/junior colleagues and actively participate in project planning and collaborations.
Qualifications
• Relevant PhD degree in, for example, immunology, biomedicine, molecular biology, cell biology, or a related field.
• Documented experience of experimental laboratory work in cell and/or molecular biology (including sterile technique and cell culture).
• Good understanding of immunology and/or cancer biology, and an interest in immune cell anti-tumor function.
• Experience in analyzing and interpreting data and drawing conclusions in a structured manner.
• Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written).
• Ability to work independently, carefully, and in a solution-oriented manner, as well as to collaborate in a team.
Merit (preferred qualifications)
• Practical experience with NK cell work: isolation from blood/PBMCs, cytokine stimulation/activation, and co-culture with tumor cells.
• Experience with flow cytometry and analysis (phenotyping, functional readouts) as well as cell sorting (FACS).
• Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 (lentiviral or RNP/electroporation).
• Documented scientific output (e.g., publications, preprints, conference contributions) and/or experience in writing manuscripts.
• Previous experience in supervision, project management, and driving projects from idea to delivery.
Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 11 months, with placement at the Institute of biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
