Arbetsbeskrivning
at the Department of Physics. Closing date: 7 december, 2025.
The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Science with about 150 employees and 2,000 students. The XSoLaS group with PI:s Anders Nilsson, Lars G.M. Pettersson, Foivos Perakis, and Sergey Koroidov is organized within the Division of Chemical Physics and focuses on studies of water, solutions and heterogeneous catalysis using mainly X-ray probes and theoretical simulation techniques.
The Department of Physics and Stockholm University are affiliated with Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN), which supports expat partners with professional events and career-related advice, and by building a social network in their new hometown. www.sdcn.se/.
Project description
We seek a postdoctoral fellow to contribute to the work in the group of Prof. Lars G.M. Pettersson on aspects of modeling of water. This includes all or a selection of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, advanced quantum chemical x-ray spectroscopy calculations, simulation of EXAFS signals, wave function treatment of protons and development of real-time TDDFT propagation techniques.
The funding comes from an ERC Advanced Grant (Gases in Water - GAS-WAT) with the goal to explore possible consequences of a two-state picture of liquid water in terms of chemistry and aquatic life. Specifically, we aim to determine the local structures associated with structural fluctuations in ambient water and how they may be involved in solvation of gases, specifically O2, and how evolution may have led to a change in structure of water around fish gills to assist extracting the oxygen. To this end we combine MD and MC simulations with target structures based on analysis of computed XAS and XES spectra, investigate effects of proton spin-coupling and proton wave function descriptions, as well as measure and analyze EXAFS of dissolved gases and participate in x-ray free-electron laser experiments targeting different aspects of water.
Main responsibilities
The candidate is expected to contribute significantly to developing and applying techniques as stated above.
Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to scientific programming and methods development skills, as well as experience from large-scale simulation techniques
Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2025-01-01 or as per agreement.
